JOHN D. STRAHOSKY

John D. Strahosky, 91, of Charleroi, (Carroll Twp.), died Saturday, March 13, 2010 in the Monongahela Valley Hospital. He was born March 3, 1919, in Donora, a son of Theodore and Anna Dugan Strahosky.

Mr. Strahosky started his career at US Steel Donora Zinc Works until its closing. He then worked on Titan missiles for the US Government in Rapid City, South Dakota. He returned to the area and was employed as an electrician at US Steel Irvin Works until his retirement in 1981. While working at the steel mill, he owned and operated Johnny’s Drive-In in Finleyville in the early 1950's. It was the first "custard" ice cream shop between Uniontown and Pittsburgh. He was a member of St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Donora. A US Army, WW II veteran with the 703rd Tank Destroyer Battalion (3rd Armor "Spearhead" Division), serving in the Normandy, Ardennes and Rhineland Campaigns. He was an avid photographer and was his company’s unofficial photographer during the war. Mr. Strahosky was blessed with a long and good quality of life.

He is survived by his son Thomas Strahosky of Charleroi; daughter Rosemary and husband Allen Suchko of Martinez, Georgia; grandson Michael Suchko of Houston, Texas; granddaughter Stacy and husband Ben Tanner of Grovetown, Georgia; great grandson Logan Tanner; two sisters Mary Sudor and Helen George, both of Hershey; many nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Gizella "Isabel" Thomas Strahosky who died Sept. 26, 2004; his son John J. Strahosky who died January 12, 1999; three sisters Sophia Artley, Olga Slebodnik, and Margaret Zewe and his brother William Strahosky.

Friends will be received on Sunday 7-9 PM and Monday 2-4 and 7-9 PM in the Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 W. Main Street, Monongahela where funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Stephen Wahal officiating. Committal services and entombment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery with full military honors accorded at the chapel by the Mon Valley Honor Guard and Firing Squad.

The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 135 South College Street, Washington, PA 15301.

 

 


 



ELIZABETH ANN STEIN

Elizabeth Ann Stein, 77, of Washington, died unexpectedly Friday, January, 15, 2010 in Tucson, Arizona. She was born September 22, 1932, in Gary, Indiana, a daughter of the late Margaret C. Anderson and William Machin.

Ann grew up in Ginger Hill and was a graduate of Monongahela High School. She was an accomplished Barrel Racer, having owned, trained and ridden several horses to numerous wins in the Futurity and Rodeo Arena throughout the United States. One special win for her was the 1975 AQHA World Champion Jr. Barrel Racing Horse title. She was a Gold Card member of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association. On March 22, 1957, she married Marty Stein who survives.

Also surviving are a son John (Tami) Stein and a daughter Susie (Dick) Irey, three grandsons Cody, Austin, and Tyler Stein and one great grandson Will.

Ann was the last of her immediate family.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 20, 2010 in the First Presbyterian Church, 609 Chess Street, Monongahela. At her request there will be a private burial in Monongahela Cemetery. The Frye Funeral Home Inc., Monongahela is in charge of the arrangements.
